Job Summary:

Provides directions and planning of campus efforts to ensure regulatory compliance, minimize safety and radiation risks and protect health and the environment under senior management direction. This position establishes compliance systems for occupational safety, laboratory safety, food safety, construction safety, and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for a multi-campus academic, research and the healthcare network.

Scope: Institution-wide, all campuses, all areas

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plans, develops, directs and evaluates the personnel within the radiation & occupational safety function of UTMB and provides leadership direction to management.

  • Participates in shared leadership responsibility among the safety groups.

  • Reviews and incorporates radiation protection standards as promulgated by all regulating agencies.Keeps fully informed on all existing and proposed changes in occupational safety, laboratory safety, food safety, construction safety, and radiation and laser protection regulations.

  • Represents the University when dealing with regulatory agencies.

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for minimizing safety and radiation risks throughout UTMB.

  • Develops and implements training programs related to occupational safety, laboratory safety, food safety, construction safety, radiation, laser and MRI safety.

  • Consulting with RSO and ARSO, directs all radiation safety related responses to emergencies. Provides emergency support as appropriate to chemical events and may support other disciplines within EHS during emergencies.

  • Provides committee support for the UTMB Safety Committees, Subcommittees, UT System Advisory Groups (RSAG, BCSAG, OSAG) and all other applicable committees assigned by management.

  • Manages all activities with subcontracting of vendors for radioactive waste handling and disposal services and provide technical oversight for radioactive waste disposal.

  • Promote and protect UTMB values including diversity, teamwork, fair work environment, and respect of others; maintain a “team” spirit; works and cooperate with other disciplines (across University lines) to ensure maximum and best use of resources.

  • Manages assigned program budget.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of and experience with occupational safety, laboratory safety, construction safety, food safety, water quality, radiation physics and principles of protection.

  • Ability to create policies and procedures that maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Proficiency with radiation detection and measurement equipment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of regulatory compliance.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of professional and technical staff to achieve organizational and program goals.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Salary:

Beginning salary will likely range from $134,692 to $185,407 annually. Actual salary offered will be dependent on qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a natural or applied science related field.

  • Five years of related experience with a minimum of 3 years of management or supervisory responsibility.

  • 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in natural or applied science or related field.

  • 5 years of related experience with 5 years of management or supervisory responsibility.

  • Texas Licensed Medical Physicist

  • Certified in one or more of the following:

  • Incident Command

  • DOT/ IATA shipping

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

  • Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

  • Registered Environmental Manager (REM)

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP)

  • Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO)

  • Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer (CMLSO)
