JOB SUMMARY :

The Marriott International Law Department services the Company's lodging business around the world. The Europe and Middle East & Africa (EMEA) Law Department provides legal services to support the development and lodging operations of all Marriott-branded lodging products in the region, including the full-service Marriott and Renaissance brands, luxury Ritz-Carlton, Bulgari and EDITION brands, and select-service Courtyard and Residence Inn brands.

The Manager I, Legal Services position is part of the Operations & Asset Management practice group of the EMEA Law Department and will report to a VP & Corporate Counsel, Operations & Asset Management attorney in the team. The position mainly deals with matters relating to Europe but may be asked to cover and work on matters in Middle East and Africa.

The basic functions of this position are to provide support to the company in connection with the operations of the company’s leased, managed and franchised hotels in EMEA. The Manager I, Legal Services will assume a principal role in supporting the day-to-day legal needs of the company’s managed hotels, the franchise support organization and the company’s above-property services in EMEA. The position serves as a primary point of contact for hotel managers (and their reports) seeking legal assistance from the Law Department, working with attorneys as appropriate. In addition, the Manager I, Legal Services will also assist the Law Department attorneys on certain asset management matters from time to time. The position will be based in the Europe Office in London.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

The primary responsibilities of the Manager I, Legal Services are:

  • Assume a principal role within the practice group in supporting day-to-day legal operational needs of managed hotels, the company’s franchise support organization and the company’s above-property services in EMEA. Taking responsibility for monitoring and responding to enquiries issued to the Europe Paralegal of the day inbox.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for hotel managers (and their reports) seeking legal assistance from the Marriott Law Department, working with attorneys as appropriate.

  • Assist in preparing, negotiating, and amending vendor, sales, IT, procurement, sponsorship, partnership, digital marketing, food and beverage, loyalty, promotions and other operational agreements used in Marriott's lodging business.

  • Review documents generated by Marriott’s internal stakeholders and third parties to determine if they are in conformance with Marriott's standard contractual requirements. Discuss such agreements with all relevant parties and provide revised contractual language.

  • Maintain and update iManage information; prepare letters of renewal/non-renewal, automatic renewal/termination memoranda and amendments to management agreements and franchise agreements; and assist in responding to owners and landlords concerning agreement renewals/terminations. Assist attorneys on, and organize the documentation related to acquisitions or financings of, individual hotels or hotel chains and dispositions of certain hotel properties, including tracking and transfer of files, operational, construction and real estate agreements and other necessary documents.

  • Conduct and summarize legal research as requested; provide recommendations and solutions.

  • Instruct and brief external legal counsel on matters relating to local law when applicable.

  • Draft and respond to legal correspondence and memoranda, including audit enquiries.

  • Perform other duties and special projects as requested.

CANDIDATE PROFILE - KEY TALENTS AND EXPERIENCE DESIRED

Successful candidates should possess formal training and experience as follows:

  • Three or four-year college degree and two or more years of relevant work experience, preferably in a transactional or general corporate practice; OR

  • At least four years of relevant work experience as a paralegal.

Successful candidates should possess knowledge, experience, relationship skills and demonstrate strong leadership skills, as follows:

  • Good project management skills and the ability to multi-task successfully and meet simultaneous deadlines in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact and communicate effectively, specifically demonstrate an ability to present ideas and information in a clear and concise manner and an ability to interact effectively and develop positive, professional working relationships with business colleagues as well as team members.

  • Ability to identify, monitor and share updates on legal developments and business issues relevant to the wider team in regular meetings.

  • Possess the ability to work proactively, independently and as part of a team.

  • Good judgment and use of discretion.

  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.

  • Diligence, dependability, and strong work ethic.

  • Strong verbal and written English skills.

  • Strong skills with MS Office, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Proficiency or capacity to learn to utilize Share Point and Teams required.

  • Familiarity with database functionality and operation.
